About Us
Ovyl is a Nashville-based product development studio that helps companies bring physical products to life—from first sketch to final shipment. We work with startups and established brands to design and engineer consumer electronics, lifestyle products, medical devices, and more.
We’re a hands-on team of designers and engineers who care about making things that are useful, well-designed, and built to last. We prototype early, test often, and care about both the big picture and the small details.
Ovyl is growing, and we’re looking for a Senior Product Design Engineer who’s excited to build great products and help shape what’s next.
About you
- You design hardware products like what is shown on our website (https://www.ovyl.io/) — not bridges, HVAC systems, heavy industrial machinery or process engineering.
- You have a portfolio with real CAD screenshots (or files), photos of final products, and at least one case study that goes deep on your DFM/DFA thinking.
- You’ve shipped at least 2–3 real products with injection-molded parts and integrated PCBAs.
- You know how to balance what looks good, works well, and can actually be manufactured — DFM, DFA, and tolerance stack-ups are your bread and butter.
- You’ve worked in a product design studio or consultancy before (highly preferred) — you know how to juggle different projects, clients, and timelines without losing sight of the details.
- You love working with ID, EE, UR/UX, and factories to get the whole product right.
- You’re hands-on: you do the CAD, build the prototype, show up for EVT/DVT/PVT, and work with suppliers to fix the inevitable surprises.
In this role, you will...
- Own mechanical design for a range of consumer and B2B hardware products.
- Create clean, production-ready CAD models, drawings, and tolerance analyses.
- Develop inventive, practical solutions to complex mechanical and system-level challenges.
- Work side-by-side with industrial design, electrical, research, and UX folks to get the whole product right.
- Guide suppliers through DFM reviews, tooling, and production builds.
- Support EVT/DVT/PVT builds and help solve manufacturing hiccups.
- Prototype rapidly and iteratively—hands-on with 3D printing, machining, and other shop tools.
- Specify materials and manufacturing processes that align with product goals and constraints.
Qualifications
- 6+ years in mechanical design engineering for consumer, medical, or B2B hardware products.
- Proven experience with plastic part design, PCBA integration, and enclosures.
- Strong track record taking products through EVT/DVT/PVT.
- Proficient in SolidWorks (or similar).
- Portfolio required: Your application must include a link to your portfolio with CAD screenshots, finished product photos, and at least one detailed DFM/DFA case study.
- Comfortable prototyping hands-on — you know your way around a shop.
- Good communicator — you can explain your thinking clearly and receive feedback well.
- Must live in the Nashville, TN, area or be willing to relocate. This role is hybrid, and we expect at least 3+ days in the office per week.
- Must be allowed to work in the USA now and in the future. We cannot support visas at this time.
Compensation, Benefits, & Perks
All full-time employees at Ovyl get the following benefits:
- Health Insurance: Ovyl covers 100% of your health insurance premium. You pay the difference for a spouse and/or dependents.
- Dental, Vision, HSA: Ovyl offers these plans but does not contribute to their premiums.
- 401k: Ovyl contributes 3% to your 401k plan, regardless of your elected contribution.
- In-office policy: Ovyl believes that the best products are designed in a highly integrated and collaborative office environment, but we also understand the need for flexibility and the option to work from home. We expect you to be in office on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and a floating day of your choice.
- 25 flexible PTO Days and unlimited sick days: At Ovyl, we have a different approach for federal holidays, opting to create a total pool of 25 PTO days. Federal holidays are now “quiet days” where meetings or internal messages are not allowed. You can still take these days off as PTO or save your days for a more extended vacation.
- Flexibility: Ovyl truly believes in life > work. We understand appointments may pop up, the kids may need to be grabbed from school, and life happens. We offer flexibility to shift your schedule to accommodate whatever the week brings.
- Learning Stipend: Ovyl encourages everyone to use a stipend each year to make or learn things outside of work. Take a cooking class, subscribe to audible, or create something just to learn a new skill. Just be prepared to share what you learned!
- Stocked fridge and snacks: We’ll stay stocked up on healthy snacks, carbonated water, coffee, and tea.
